Faux Flowers and Sustainability: Help us keep fake flowers out of the landfill!
What is the environmental impact of real flowers vs. fake flowers? The answer to this question may seem simple, but actually depends on many factors, such as energy usage; travel distance; chemicals used in production, pesticides, or fertilizers; packaging; land use; and more. Seasonally-available native flowers grown locally using sustainable floristry practices are generally considered the most sustainable option for buying new flowers. But what we do with the fake flowers we already have matters, too!
While the discussion around the environmental impact of buying faux flowers vs. real ones is complex and lacks comprehensive data, we know that we can lower the carbon footprint of faux flowers that we already have by reusing them multiple times. We have collected many donations of faux flowers from people who no longer had a use for them, but didn’t want to throw them away! Our mission is to keep this kind of material in circulation and for as long as possible to help slow climate change.
Join us, and our volunteer instructor Betsy Busche, for a wreath making workshop at the Oneida County Public Market and learn the skills you need to reuse faux flowers in a fresh new decoration, and give them a second life!
